The fear does not come out of nowhere
The 2017 client study by the building client consultancy "Almondia" uncovered alarming figures. In 75 per cent of all private homes built between 2012 and 2017, project costs exploded. On every fifth job site, spending rose by 20 per cent. On every tenth house it even rose by 30 per cent. The reasons for this economic nightmare are many. Most of the time the costing assumes a tight schedule, reliable suppliers and beautiful weather. But then a few workers are suddenly off sick, suppliers drop the wrong building material at the job site and cannot deliver the right one until four weeks later. And instead of the typical September sunshine there is constant rain. None of that can simply be calculated in. Even small delays lead to a domino effect here. Everyone knows what that can mean. When the invoices pile up and nobody can or wants to pay them any more, in the end it even threatens to end in insolvency.
Famous cases that made it into the media
Building clients and construction firms can at least console themselves that they are not alone with this phenomenon. Exploding costs are part of many construction projects. Famous projects even make the headlines with their faulty costing. In the summer of 2019 Deutsche Bahn had to admit that spending on the current bridge refurbishment programme had already doubled! Even the most famous buildings in the world have had to struggle with incredible figures. Building the Sydney Opera House was fifteen times more expensive than planned! The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg was supposed to be built for €77 million. In the end the bill came to 866 million. That is more than eleven times as much. On top of that, with all these famous projects the build took far longer than planned. So wages play a significant role in this phenomenon. You can do it better!
